MAZDA’S little MX-5 sports car has pulled off a major double in the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) awards.

It has just been voted the 2016 World Car of the Year. And it has taken the Design Car award as well.

The MX-5, which has won rave reviews since its launch, beat off challenges for the World Car of the Year award from the other two finalists – the Audi A4 and Mercedes GLC.

The winners of the main and subsidiary awards have just been announced at the New York International Auto Show.

BMW’s 7-series saloon was declared the 2016 World Luxury Car. The other two finalists were the Audi Q7 and the Volvo XC90.

The Audi R8 Coupe took the World Performance Car accolade. The two other finalists were the Honda Civic Type R and Mercedes AMG C63 Coupé.

And Toyota’s hydrogen car, the Mirai, was declared the 2016 World Green Car ahead of the Chevrolet Volt and Toyota Prius hybrid.

The vehicles were selected and voted on by an international jury panel comprising 73 top-level automotive journalists from 23 countries around the world.  Each juror was appointed by the World Car Steering Committee on the basis of expertise, experience, credibility, and influence.  Each juror typically drives and evaluates new vehicles on a regular basis as part of their professional work.   Through their respective outlets they collectively reach an audience of millions world-wide.   The international accounting firm KPMG tabulates the jurors’ ballots.
